How We'll Work

Writing:
We'll talk through your questions and assignments.  We'll discuss your ideas and try to locate what you want to focus on.  I will talk you through your thinking, taking notes and handing you the notes so that you can see what you've discovered.  We'll discuss ways to organize, support, and develop your ideas.  You'll do the writing.  Then we'll talk about revision, editing, and polishing your work.

Reading:
I'll coach you through the reading.  We'll discuss the main ideas and see how the story -- whether history or literature -- unfolds.  We will come to understand the author's thinking and find meaning and connections.

Test Prep:
We'll practice.  We'll look at sample tests and try to figure out what's important and how to best prepare for and answer short answer and essay questions.

Vocabulary and Grammar
We can practice and study words, their use and meaning.  We will look at how the English language works and try to understand the terminology and effect of its grammar.

Primarily, I will be your coach and advocate as you venture through your education.

About Me

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in History and minors in English and Art.  My master's degree in education is from Harvard University.  I am certified in Michigan and New York State to teach English and social studies, grades 7-12.

I have taught English at Scarsdale High School, Mamaroneck High School, Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua.  I've also taught English, History and Humanities at Groves and Seaholm High Schools in Birmingham, Michigan.

My students have won awards for their writing and have even published writing we worked on together.  College deans have called students I've worked with to tell them what wonderful application essays they wrote.  I do not write the essays for my students, rather I will talk them through their ideas and coach them to find the best ways to organize and polish their writing.

I am a published writer with essays, reviews, and short fiction published in the Michigan Quarterly Review, New Letters, Raw Vision, Salon, and more.
